Honestly, a crusty old salvage diver in Mobile told me my umbilical checks were a joke and it changed my whole routine

He was mostly laughing at my whole pre-dive check list, like it was some kind of nervous habit. @reeseb73 is right about their crazy methods, this guy basically said I was checking things that never fail and missing the stuff that actually kills you. My first change was to stop checking the hose connections every five minutes and start really looking at the knife strap and light clips. Turns out he had a point about focusing on the weak links instead of the solid parts. It was a pretty humbling lesson from a guy who probably held his gear together with duct tape and hope.

Laughs at hose checks but saves the zip tie repairs. Sounds about right for someone whose rig looks held together with fishing line and prayers. Those old guys know what actually fails on you. Funny how the stuff that looks solid gets all the attention while the little clips and straps are what kill you.

Hang on, what exactly was he calling a joke? Was it your gear setup, the timing between checks, or something else? I've heard some of those old-timers have methods that seem crazy but actually work. What part of your routine did you change first?
