A 60 cent zip tie saved my umbilical from chafing on the bell
I kept getting little nicks in my umbilical where it rubbed the edge of the bell hatch on a job down in Port Fourchon, and I could not figure out a good fix. I tried wrapping it in duct tape and that lasted about one dive before it peeled off in the water. Then an old sat diver told me to just run a couple zip ties around the hose and clip the tails so it rides on the zip tie instead of the hose itself. Cost me maybe 60 cents and I have done 14 dives on this same umbilical with zero new chafe marks. You have to snug them so they spin a little but not slide, and check them every surface interval. Anyone else got a cheap trick that beats buying a hose guard?
