A 30 year diver told me to stop rushing my pre-dive checks and it cut my surface time way down
I was working a dock job in San Diego last month and an old timer I was partnered with pulled me aside after our second dive of the day. He said I was treating my pre-dive as paperwork instead of a real check, going through the motions in maybe 8 minutes when he took closer to 25. I got defensive at first because I had been diving 6 years and nobody ever said anything. But he pointed out I had missed a small cut in my umbilical that whole week, and if it had gotten worse underwater I would have been in real trouble. So I started actually slowing down, checking my gear like it was the first time I had seen it, and going through my reg and mask with my hands instead of just my eyes. The funny thing is my bottom times got better because I stopped having to come up early for little issues. My surface intervals got smoother too since I was not stressed out fixing stuff on deck. Anybody else get a wake up call from an old head like that, or was it always drilled into you from day one?
