Went from hating Frank Miller to loving him after reading Batman Year One again

I used to think Frank Miller was just overrated edge lord stuff after The Dark Knight Returns felt too grim to me. But last month I pulled out my old copy of Batman Year One from 1987 and actually paid attention to the panel layouts and dialogue pacing. The way he builds Gotham as a character in just 4 issues is something I totally missed when I was 17. Has anyone else had a total 180 on a creator after revisiting their early work?

Totally agree with you on the Gordon thing. When I was younger I thought he was just the cop who shows up to yell at Batman, but rereading Year One I realized how much of the story is really his. The way Miller writes him sitting in that apartment, just totally alone and trying to do the right thing in a city that's pure rot. He's the real hero of that book. It's funny how you can stare at the same pages for years and not see what's right in front of you.

Read Year One as a kid and completely missed how smart his Gordon is.
