Torn between the classic Claremont run or starting fresh with the Ultimate universe

I had about two hours before my night shift last week and finally had to pick which big X-Men storyline to dive into. Went with Claremont's Dark Phoenix Saga because everyone swears by it. Got through the first issue and honestly felt lost with all the old references. Does anyone else struggle jumping into older comics without the full backstory?

Jumped into Claremont's run myself a few months back and felt exactly the same way. Dark Phoenix hits harder if you've read the earlier stuff but even then there's like a million subplots going on. I ended up keeping a wiki tab open on my phone just to look up characters I didn't recognize. It gets way easier once you find your footing though, the writing is worth pushing through the confusion.

Yeah just wiki the old stuff as you go, that's what I did and it worked fine.
