The dollar bin trick that rebuilt my silver age run

I spent about 6 months hunting for Silver Age X-Men issues one at a time at shops around Portland, and kept overpaying for beat up copies. Then I noticed a shop near Powell's had a dollar bin where the keys were mixed in with junk, so I started going every Thursday when they restocked. In 3 visits I found 5 issues I needed, including a #32 that just needed a press and a new bag. It's not glamorous, but has anyone else had luck with organized dollar bins over online auctions?

Portland has like fifteen comic shops plus that one guy selling long boxes out of his van on Division. I get finding a #32 for a buck is a win, but three visits of hunting through dollar bins to save maybe forty bucks after pressing and bagging sounds like a lot of effort for not much payoff. Online auctions have their own problems, sure, but at least you can filter by grade and not spend an afternoon smelling mildew. Unless you're specifically trying to flip these, I'd say the time you spent digging probably costs more than what you saved. But hey, if you enjoy it, that's the real value there.
