Met a guy at a comic shop in Portland who swore the 90s X-Men cartoon was better than the comics

I was browsing back issues last Saturday when this dude started lecturing me about how the animated series 'fixed' the Claremont run. He said the Phoenix Saga was too confusing in the books and needed to be simplified for TV. Has anyone else run into fans who think adaptations are actually better than the source material?

Laughed out loud when I read that, I swear half the fun of the Phoenix Saga was trying to figure out what the heck was going on (like, was it a cosmic entity or just Jean going crazy?). Simplified for TV sounds like code for "took out all the weird psychic battles and replaced them with laser fights.

1975 Claremont run had a whole issue that was literally just cosmic fight scenes with no dialogue, and fans loved it. The TV version missed the point that Phoenix was meant to be this messy, vague thing that couldn't be pinned down as good or evil. Stripping that ambiguity out to make it kid-friendly killed the whole psychological horror angle that made the comics so memorable.
