Just saw a guy at my local shop drop $400 on a graded copy of X-Men 1 and it was a total scam

I was at Golden Apple Comics last Saturday and watched this dude pay $400 for a CGC 9.2 X-Men 1 (the 1991 one, not the real one). He was bragging to the clerk about how it was an investment. Then I looked closer and the serial number on the slab didn't match any record on the CGC site. I didn't say anything because I didn't want to start a fight, but has anyone else noticed more fake slabs popping up at conventions lately?

Man that sucks. I saw something similar at a con in Anaheim last year. Guy had a stack of "high grade" slabs all with weird labels. I pulled out my phone and checked the CGC verification right there. Told the seller the numbers didn't match. He got all defensive and grabbed them off the table real quick. What worked for me was just being direct but calm. Said hey man I think these might be fake, check the serial online. He didn't argue much just packed up and left. Now I always check before I buy. The CGC site loads fast on my phone. Better to look like a weirdo than lose $400.

Yeah that's the move right there... check the serial before you hand over cash.
