Vent: My truck's transmission blew up two days before a big job in Tempe

It happened on the freeway last Thursday, just a loud bang and then nothing. I had a $15,000 kitchen remodel starting Monday and all my tools were in the bed. I had to rent a U-Haul van for a week, which cost me $400, and beg a buddy to help me move everything. Anyone else have a major work expense hit right at the worst possible time?

That kind of bad luck feels like a rule of the universe. It never seems to be a slow Tuesday when things break, always right before something big. The big cost is one thing, but the stress and scrambling to fix it is what really gets you. Makes you wonder if the world runs on some kind of spiteful timing.

Man, that's brutal timing. The rental cost on top of the repair bill is just salt in the wound. Hope you at least nailed the Tempe job after all that.

Hate to be the one to say it but maybe you should have seen this coming. That truck wasn't exactly new and if you were hauling $15k in tools around for kitchen remodels you were probably pushing it hard. A little preventive maintenance a few months back could have saved you this whole headache. Also you had zero backup plan? No trailer hitch option or access to a spare vehicle? $400 for a U-Haul sucks but it's a drop in the bucket compared to losing that job entirely. Sometimes we gotta own our own bad luck.
