That night at the Waffle House in Athens made me quit chasing the degree
Tbh I was 20 and working the overnight shift at a Waffle House in Athens, Georgia, and a regular named Dale came in around 3am. He was maybe 55, ran his own HVAC shop, and he asked me why I looked dead on my feet. I told him I was juggling two semesters of classes I didn't care about and 30 hours a week here. He said he never finished school and had 6 trucks on the road and asked me straight up what I actually wanted to do with my hands. Two months later I left school and started riding along with his crew for 12 bucks an hour. That was 11 years ago and I still think about how that one conversation flipped the switch for me. Does anyone else have a random stranger or late night moment that pushed them to finally walk away?
