Showerthought: I realized I was wrong about college when my coding bootcamp instructor in Austin said 'You've been paying to learn how to follow, not how to think'.
Has anyone else had a single comment flip a switch like that?

My buddy was stuck in a dead end job for years. His dad told him "you're not selling your time, you're selling your life" and he quit the next week. He went back to school for welding and is way happier now.

Jumping into the conversation... Yeah, Nora's got a point there. Quitting the next week after hearing some sage advice sounds like a movie scene, not real life. But maybe his buddy was already halfway out the door and just needed that final push from his dad. Still, welding school isn't cheap and neither is rent, so I'm guessing he had some savings or a supportive family member backing him up. Most people would probably end up selling their life at a worse job if they quit without a plan first. Glad it worked out for him though, but that's a risky move for sure.

That's a great story but the timing seems off. Quitting the next day is a big risk without a plan. Most people can't just walk out on a job that pays the bills. It's more common to line up the welding program first, or save some money. The dad's advice is solid, but acting that fast isn't realistic for everyone. Glad it worked out for him though.
