Ran into my old advisor at Home Depot, of all places

Stopped by the lumber aisle last Saturday for some cedar boards and there she was, my freshman year advisor. We chatted for a bit and she asked how things were going. I told her I manage the hardware store now and run a small side business building raised garden beds. She said she remembered I always paid more attention to the lab safety demos than the actual lectures. It felt good to show her I landed somewhere solid without the degree, you know? Has anyone else run into a professor or advisor after quitting and had that weird moment of wanting to prove yourself?

My advisor probably remembers me as the guy who almost set the lab on fire, not the garden bed guy.
