My uncle told me a degree was a waste of money and I got SO mad back then

Back in 2018 I was all set to go to a state school in Ohio until my uncle pulled me aside at Thanksgiving. He said unless I was going to be a doctor or a lawyer, a four year degree was just a $40,000 piece of paper. I was FURIOUS and told him he just didn't get how the world works now. Fast forward six years and I've been working as a welder for three years, making $32 an hour with zero debt. Meanwhile my buddy who finished his business degree is still stuck at a call center. Has anyone else had a relative give you advice that you HATED at first but turned out to be totally right?

$32 an hour as a WELDER? I'm shocked you're making that much with no debt.

lisa_hill23, that $32 an hour thing actually surprised me too at first. But the welding trade pays really well once you get certified and put in some time. It makes me think of my older cousin who went to school for graphic design back in like 2012 and was super proud until he realized his job was basically just making banner ads for cat food websites. He was so mad when his dad told him to learn a trade instead, said the same stuff about "the future is digital" and all that. Now he runs a small HVAC business with his brother and they're both doing way better than most of his design school buddies. Sometimes the old guys really do know what they're talking about even if they say it in the most annoying way possible.
