I finally tried trade school after dropping out at 22, and the result surprised me

Dropped out of a state school in Ohio back in 2011 after two semesters of failing calc and racking up debt I couldn't afford. Spent 9 years bouncing between retail and food service jobs, making about $14 an hour max. Last year I got tired of it and signed up for a 6 month welding certificate at a local community college program. I figured it was just to get a piece of paper, but the hands-on setup was completely different from lecture classes. The instructor had me fixing a cracked trailer frame by my third week, and that moment of actually solving a real problem with my hands changed how I saw work. Now I'm making $22 an hour with overtime, but the bigger thing was realizing college wasn't the only path to a skill that people pay for. Has anyone else found a trade or certificate program that worked better for them than traditional college ever did?
