Guy at the temp agency in Des Moines asked why I listed my degree on the application and it hit me
I left school back in 2021 with about 90 credits and nothing to show for it, and for a long time I still wrote "some college" on every single job application because I figured it helped. Then last spring I was filling out paperwork at a temp agency in Des Moines for a warehouse gig, and the guy behind the counter looked at my sheet and asked me straight up why I was advertising a degree I never finished. He said most of the managers he works with see an unfinished degree as a sign someone bails when it gets hard, which stung to hear but honestly made sense to me. I dropped it from my resume that same day and started listing the two forklift certs I got from a community class instead. I got a callback within a week from a place I'd already applied to twice before, and that felt like my answer. Maybe it was coincidence and your mileage may vary, but I wish somebody had said it to me back in 2021 instead of letting me keep typing that line for four years. Has anyone else had a hiring person say something like that, or was this just one guy's opinion?
