A guy in the Walmart parking lot told me my bachelor's degree was just a receipt, and I can't stop thinking about it
I dropped out of a state school in Ohio after 2 semesters back in 2019 and I was loading groceries into my car when this older guy saw my old college sticker and said that. My first thought was that he was bitter, but then I realized he kind of had a point for people like me who weren't sure what they wanted anyway. On the other side, my sister finished her nursing degree and she says the piece of paper is the only reason she gets interviews at all. So which is it, is a degree actual proof you learned something or just a $30,000 ticket to get past a filter? I really want to hear from dropouts who went back later, did finishing change anything for you or not?
That $30,000 ticket line is close but not quite the whole picture. The degree is a filter, yeah, but it's also proof you finished something hard when quitting was easier, which is the part your Walmart guy was ignoring. Most jobs don't care what you learned in Psych 101, they care that you showed up for four years and didn't fold. Your sister is right that the paper gets her interviews, but she also learned actual stuff that would kill somebody if she got it wrong, so nursing is kind of a bad example for either side. For dropouts going back, the degree change is real but it's less about the learning and more about the doors it opens, and that seems to be the honest answer.
