Why does nobody tell you to actually measure your coffee beans?

I spent like 2 years just scooping beans out of the bag with a spoon and winging it every morning. Then my brother came over last month in Austin and weighed it on his little scale and I realized I'd been using like double the amount of grounds. My coffee had been basically mud this whole time and I thought that was normal. Has anyone else had that moment where you find out youve been making coffee completely backwards?

Right, because who needs a full night's sleep when you can mainline battery acid every morning? I feel personally attacked by your brother and his fancy kitchen lab equipment. My "coffee" was basically a science experiment in bitterness - I could probably have stripped paint with it. Glad to know I wasn't the only one yolo-ing my beans like it was a casino.

Yolo-ing my beans like it was a casino" is gonna stick with me, @davidh88. I read somewhere that the whole coffee-to-water ratio thing was figured out by some coffee nerd back in the 60s, like two tablespoons per six ounces or something. I just dump and pray, and now I'm thinking my "strong coffee" was just burnt bean soup.
