Warning: My local shop's 'light roast' is basically hot bean water

Last week I grabbed a cup from that new place on Maple Street, the one with all the plants. They called it a bright Ethiopian light roast. Tasted like weak tea, zero body. I asked the barista about the roast date and he just shrugged. Three years ago I would have drunk it and said nothing, but after learning from a friend in Seattle, I know better now. Has anyone else had a place totally miss the mark on a roast profile?

Hot bean water" is a perfect way to put it. When your barista shrugged about the roast date, did you get the feeling he just didn't know, or that he knew it was old and didn't care? That detail makes the whole thing so much worse.

Ugh that's the worst. My old office had a machine they called "breakfast blend" that was just brown water. We started a secret coffee fund to get real stuff.
