Tried a pour-over after a barista said my drip machine was burning the coffee

She told me my $40 Mr. Coffee was heating the water way too hot and scorching the grounds. Switched to a $25 plastic V60 and a gooseneck kettle off Facebook Marketplace, my morning cup tastes way less bitter now. Anyone else get schooled by a coffee shop worker on their home setup?

That part about the barista saying the water was too hot got me. I had a similar wake up call but it was about grind size. I was using pre-ground grocery store stuff for years, thinking it was fine. Then my buddy who roasts beans at home let me try his hand grinder and some fresh beans. I didn't realize how much dust and chunks I was getting from those pre-ground bags. My pour overs went from tasting like muddy water to actually having flavor notes the bag talked about. It was a whole new world.

omg @ivanlewis yes! That is exactly what happened to me too. I was using pre-ground from the grocery store for like two years and thought I was making decent coffee. Then a friend gave me a bag of freshly roasted beans and a cheap hand grinder and I was honestly shocked at how much more flavor came through. The consistency makes such a huge diff. I ended up tossing my old grinder and got a decent burr one and it's like I'm drinking a whole different drink now. It's wild how much the grind changes everything, even the water temp matters but the grind is the real game changer for sure.
