Showerthought: My first pour over disaster at the cabin

I was up at my friend's place in the Blue Ridge Mountains last fall, and I forgot my usual gooseneck kettle. Tried to make a pour over with a regular tea kettle, and it was a mess, water went everywhere and the coffee tasted like weak dirt. Ended up using a clean sock as a filter to slow the pour, which actually worked okay. Has anyone else had to get creative with gear when you're stuck without the right stuff?

Huh, never thought of a sock trick but that's actually kind of genius...

Saw a video where someone used a paper towel as a filter in a pinch.

Yeah, the "in a pinch" part is so real. My buddy did that with a coffee maker at a sketchy motel once. It worked okay but left a weird papery taste in his cup. He said he'd just go without coffee next time.
