Tried to win a Mario Kart tournament with a blue shell dodge and it backfired in a way I still laugh about
So I played in a local Mario Kart 8 tournament at a game shop in Fort Worth about 6 weeks ago, 32 players, and I made it to the final round. On the last lap of Rainbow Road I was sitting in 2nd, one turn from the finish, and I got a blue shell warning. Instead of just eating it, I tried to time a drift boost off a ramp so the shell would hit me midair and I would land past the blast. It missed the ramp by about half a second, I got clipped on the edge, spun out into the void, and dropped from 2nd to 6th. What I learned is that fancy dodges only work when you've practiced them a hundred times, not when you've watched a highlight clip twice and feel brave. The guy who won just ate his shell and kept driving, which feels obvious now. Looking back, my plan had maybe a 20 percent chance of working and a 100 percent chance of looking cool if it did. So for anyone who plays these games at a decent level, how do you decide when to go for the risky line and when to just take the hit and stay alive?
