Took a $500 bonus over a guaranteed promotion and it blew up in my face

My boss gave me two options last quarter: take a $500 spot bonus for finishing a project early, or wait 6 months for a title bump to team lead. I grabbed the cash because I needed it for car repairs. 4 months later they gave the lead role to someone else who stuck around. The bonus got eaten up by taxes anyway, I net like $320 on it. Still kicking myself for not thinking longer term. Anyone else take the quick payout and regret it later?

Yeah "it blew up in my face" is putting it mildly dude. You got $320 and a front row seat to someone else getting your promotion.

Man I hate how taxes eat up bonuses like that, it's almost like you never really got it in the first place. But honestly the promotion probably would've been taxed even harder when you finally got it, not that it makes the sting any better though.
