TIL a chess player at my local club went from losing 9 straight to winning a tournament in 4 months, and I can't decide if it was the coach or just the break
I play at a club in Columbus on Tuesday nights and there's this guy named Ray who I'd beaten maybe 6 times in a row over about a year. Back in January he lost 9 straight games at our club blitz night, and I remember him just sitting there staring at the board after the last one. Then he took 3 weeks off, came back in February, and by May he won our 16 player spring tournament with 6 wins and 1 draw. He told me he'd hired a coach online for $40 a session twice a month and dropped from a 1350 rating to around 1620 in that stretch. Here's my issue: another guy at the club, Dennis, swears it was just the break that did it, that Ray was burned out and 3 weeks off reset his brain. I lean toward the coach thing, but 4 months feels too fast for lessons alone to explain it. Was it the $240 he paid, the time off, or did something else flip the switch? Curious if anyone here has seen a jump like that and what they think really caused it.
