The $90 tire plug kit that left me stranded on I-80 anyway

Everyone swears by those plug kits for instant fixes, but mine failed hard during a blowout outside Reno last month. I got the fancy one with the reamer and the rubber strips, watched three videos first, and still the plug tore right out when I hit 60 mph. The patch place later said the sidewall was done for, so no plug would've held anyway, which made me wonder why people push them so hard. Has anyone else had a roadside repair that just made things worse before the tow truck showed up?
