That $120 'vintage' chess set from eBay was 3D printed garbage

I collect old chess sets and thought I scored a 1970s wooden one from a seller in Ohio. It showed up smelling like burnt plastic and the pieces weighed almost nothing. I took it to a local shop in Portland and the guy laughed for a full minute before telling me it was a cheap 3D print with fake wear marks. The box felt real but the board had that shiny layer you only see on filament. I paid $120 plus shipping and I'm stuck with a novelty item I can't even gift. These resellers know exactly how to fake patina on photos. Has anyone else gotten burned buying 'vintage' collectibles online? I want to know how to spot this before I swipe my card again.

That Portland shop guy has laughed at plenty of real antiques too, so maybe get a second opinion before blaming the seller.
