Showerthought: Started counting my chess clock in 5 minute blitz after blowing a queen lead at a Denver club
I lost a 5 minute blitz game last month after being up a queen with 40 seconds left, because I kept checking the clock and panicking instead of moving. Before that I would just play the position and hope for the best, which worked maybe half the time in casual games at the Denver Chess Club. Now I set a hard rule: if I have under 30 seconds, I stop calculating and just make the first safe move I see. My win rate in those endgame scrambles went from around 30 percent to close to 70 percent over maybe 15 games. The big thing was admitting I was bad at time math, not chess. Anyone else track their scramble decisions and find a number that works better?
