Overheard a kid at my nephew's game say the wildest thing about free throws
So I'm at this 8u basketball game last Saturday in Phoenix, right? Kid misses both free throws and his teammate yells, 'Bro, just pretend the hoop is your grandma's cookies!' He swears by it, and the shooter actually sank the next one. It got me thinking about how some people need a silly mental image to lock in under pressure, while others just need to clear their head completely. I tried the cookie trick at my adult rec league that night and went 4 for 6 from the line, which is huge for me. Does anyone else have a weird mental cue that works when everything's on the line, or am I just turning into a grandma's cookie guy now?
For me it's all about breathing out slow and picturing the ball already going through the net before I even shoot. I used to play pickup at the park and this older guy told me to see the shot land before it leaves my hands, sounds weird but it works. I tried it during a close game at my local gym and went on a little hot streak from the corner, which never happens for me. The cookie thing sounds fun though, might try that next time just to switch things up. Whatever gets your head right and your hands steady is worth hanging onto.
