My return to the clothesline and what it taught me about energy
I remember my mom always hanging our clothes on a line in the backyard, with sheets flapping in the wind and smelling like sunshine. When I left home, I bought a dryer and used it for years, never really considering it. Then, last spring, my dryer quit working, and I had to string up a line between two trees. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it, and the clothes dried just fine. My electric bill went down, and I saw how easily we waste energy. Now, I make a point to hang dry when the weather is good. It's a tiny change, but it adds up, and it feels good to do my part.

Think about all the time you lose dealing with wet clothes outside. That time is better spent on stuff that actually makes money or relaxes you. The dryer's convenience beats a lower power bill most days.

Wait, I actually see this the opposite way. My dryer runs almost every single day for work clothes and towels, and trying to line dry all that just isn't practical for my schedule. The time I'd spend hanging everything is worth more to me than the bit of money saved on the bill. Doesn't the extra time and hassle cancel out some of the benefit for you?
