My neighbor Sam said buying carbon offsets is just paying to feel better, and I can't fully argue with him
Sam came over Saturday while I was putting up a rain barrel and asked why I bother with offsets when I fly to see my sister in Phoenix twice a year. He said it is like paying someone to eat your dessert and calling it a diet, and honestly, that line stuck with me all weekend. I still think the $60 I sent to a reforestation group in Oregon did something real, but I cannot prove it did more than make me feel less guilty about the flight. What got me was his point that the same $60 might do more good going to my local food bank or a bus pass fund. Does anyone here have a way to check if offsets actually do anything, or a better place to put that money?
