My neighbor said his new heat pump was 'just for comfort' and it made me think

We were talking about his new system last week and he said he only got it because his old furnace died. He didn't even know it was way more efficient. It hit different because I realized a lot of people might make greener choices without even trying, if the good option is just the normal one to pick. How do we make the climate-friendly choice the obvious default for stuff like this?

My uncle did the same thing with a water heater. Honestly, the key is making the efficient model the standard one at the store. When the sales guy just quotes you the better unit first, most folks just go with it.

But is this actually a big deal? Like @spencer_kelly said, people just buy what's in front of them, so maybe the real fix is just making the better stuff easier to get. It's not some deep change, it's just better shelves at the store.
