I thought those little green compost bins were just for show

My city started a food scrap pickup program about 8 months ago, and I figured it wouldn't make much difference. I finally looked up the numbers last week, and our neighborhood alone diverted over 3 tons of waste from the landfill in the first quarter! That waste gets turned into soil for local parks. I was totally wrong to be skeptical. It's a small habit that adds up fast. Has your town started something similar, and did you try it?

My buddy had the same doubt until his building started a pilot program. They gave everyone these small countertop bins, and he was shocked when they collected over 500 pounds of scraps in just the first month from his floor alone. It really shows how those little actions, like @marktorres said about feeding a tiny dirt factory, actually turn into something big. Has your local program caught on with most people?

Actually, that waste usually gets turned into compost first, not straight into soil. It's a cool process though.

Wait, so you're telling me my main job for months was just feeding a tiny dirt factory? I mean I figured it was good but three tons is a lot of banana peels. Maybe my city should send me a thank you note from the park flowers.
