Vent: My sister lectured me about food waste after seeing my fridge

She came over last weekend and saw four containers of moldy leftovers and a bag of slimy spinach I forgot about. Said I treat my fridge like a compost bin and that I should plan meals for the week instead of buying random stuff on a whim. Has anyone actually stuck with meal planning for real?

Treat my fridge like a compost bin" is kinda harsh but not totally wrong. I've tried meal planning three times. The first week I actually stuck to it. By week two I was eating takeout again and the planned meals just sat there going bad. Now I just buy fewer things more often. Keeps my fridge emptier and less sad.

Three times I've tried meal planning and by day four I was ordering pizza while staring at a pack of chicken breasts I was supposed to cook Tuesday. My issue is I get excited at the store about all these recipes I'll make and then work drains my energy by Wednesday. How do you actually pick recipes that don't take more than 20 minutes and won't make you hate your life by the time Friday rolls around? Because that's the part nobody tells you about - the planning feels good but the execution is where it all falls apart. I need to know if people are actually roasting vegetables on a Tuesday after a long shift or if they're just lying on social media.
