The $3 corn starch trick that finally stopped my lettuce from turning into slime after 3 days

I was throwing away half a bag of salad mix every week (you know, the sad soggy stuff at the bottom). A friend from a cooking class in Denver mentioned sprinkling corn starch on the leaves before storing them. Tried it on Tuesday with a head of romaine and it's still crisp today - Friday. No idea why it works but it does. Has anyone else found weird pantry items that keep produce fresh longer?

Wait, does that actually work without making the lettuce taste weird? I tried it last week on some romaine and it stayed crunchy for like 5 days, way longer than usual. I just used a tiny pinch per leaf, shook it off, and it didn't leave any weird residue or flavor.
