That grocery store date label made me rethink everything
Overheard a stock guy at the Safeway on 5th telling his coworker that most 'sell by' dates are just guesses. Said milk is fine for a week past if it smells okay, and eggs float test beats any stamp. I went home and sniffed stuff I tossed yesterday. Three jars of salsa and a block of cheddar were perfectly fine. Now I do the nose test before anything hits the trash. Anyone else been throwing out good food because of those labels?
...and that's exactly how I ended up eating a yogurt that was two weeks past its date while staring at my own reflection in the spoon like some kind of daredevil. My stomach has since filed a formal complaint. The nose test works great for cheese and salsa, but it's useless for my leftovers from last Tuesday because everything in my fridge just smells like the inside of my fridge at this point. I've also discovered that the float test on eggs is much more interesting when you forget which ones you already tested and end up with a dozen wet eggs on your counter. Honestly though, I'm with you. I threw out a whole bag of spinach last week because the label said "best by" and now I'm pretty sure that spinach was just fine and I'm the real expired item here.
