My neighbor tossed a whole rotisserie chicken because it was 2 days old

I was helping my neighbor carry in groceries last Tuesday and spotted their trash had a full rotisserie chicken in it. They said they bought it Monday and by Wednesday morning they figured it was bad. I opened it up, it smelled fine and looked fine, so I took it home and had it for dinner. Made me wonder how many people are tossing perfectly good food just because of a date on the package. Has anyone else run into this with friends or family who toss things way too early?

Right there with you. It's like people are scared to trust their own senses anymore and just follow arbitrary numbers on a package.

I used to be one of those people who tossed things as soon as the date passed, but you're making me rethink that. A few months ago my daughter told me I was wasting money and showed me how to actually check if food is still good by smelling and looking at it. I tested her theory with some yogurt that was a week past its date and it was perfectly fine. Now I'm a lot more careful about tossing things unless they actually smell or look bad.
