Last month I threw out a year old jar of pickles and finally got why the date matters
I used to think expiration dates were a suggestion. Last week I found a jar of pickles shoved behind my yogurt that I bought in March 2023. The brine was cloudy and the lid had this weird pop to it when I opened it. I still almost ate one because I hate wasting food. Then I remembered my roommate got sick from old salsa two years ago and spent a whole weekend on the bathroom floor. That memory stopped me cold. I dumped the pickles and checked every other container in there. Turns out I had three bottles of hot sauce from 2022 and a half eaten tub of hummus with mold growing on the underside. I used to argue that pickles last forever because of the vinegar, but cloudy brine is not normal. Has anyone else talked themselves into eating something clearly past its prime just to avoid throwing it away?
