Update: A chimney in Bellingham had me stuck for two hours last Thursday.

The flue was completely blocked by a massive bird nest, and the homeowner said it hadn't been cleaned in over a decade. What's the fastest way you've found to clear out a nest that's really packed in there?

Ever notice how people will ignore a small problem until it turns into a huge, expensive mess? That chimney is a perfect example...

Sounds like that bird family was really committed to their ten year lease. Honestly, the fastest method depends on how much of a hurry you're in versus how much of a mess you want to make indoors. A long pole from the top down can work if it's loose, but a packed one like that usually needs the old shop vac from the fireplace side, lots of bags, and a serious mask. Sometimes you just have to go slow and pull it out in chunks, which is a filthy job. The real speed comes from checking the flue first next time, before the wildlife moves in.

Actually the shop vac from the fireplace side is risky for nests that are really packed in tight. That suction can pull debris down into the cleanout or even damage the flue liner if it's old brick. Best bet is still the long pole from the top but breaking it up with a hooked rod before pulling any chunks out.
