Told a homeowner her flue was fine, then pulled 2 inches of creosote out of the smoke shelf
I was at a house in Bangor doing a routine sweep and the liner looked clean from the top, but when I reached into the smoke shelf above the damper my brush came back caked with glazed creosote. She had been burning green wood for 3 winters and the chimney looked fine from every angle a normal person would check, which is exactly why I now poke around the shelf on every single job. How many of you pull the damper out on a sweep, or do you just run the brush and call it good?
