That old timer's rod advice had me scrubbing 3 extra flues
Met a retired sweep named Ed at a supply shop in Scranton and he said to stop using my poly rods on damp creosote, switch to steel. Tried it on a stubborn rental last Tuesday, cut my time nearly in half and the brush didn't grab once. Anyone else stick with one rod type out of habit for years?
Ed at a Scranton supply shop sounds like he's been inhaling soot since the Carter years, but the man's not wrong. I ran the same fiberglass rods for like 6 years because that's what the guy who trained me handed me on day one, and I never once stopped to ask why. Switched to steel last fall and suddenly I'm not fighting the brush every time it hits a wet spot. Guess the old timers earn that gray hair somehow.
