Saw a DIY chimney cap job in Boise that made me cringe

It was a sheet metal mess held on with what looked like roofing nails, already rusting after one winter. That's a fast track to water damage and a call back for someone. Who else has seen a homeowner fix that went real bad real quick?

Roofing nails on sheet metal is a classic sign of a quick fix. What part of town was this in, because I swear I've seen the same style on a place near the North End. Did the homeowner at least try to seal around the edges with anything, or was it just bare metal slapped on there?

Oh man, ryanf66, you nailed it. This isn't just roofing. It's everywhere. You see it in the duct tape on a car bumper, the zip ties holding a fence together, the landlord special paint job over old mold. It's the art of the temporary fix becoming permanent because doing it right costs real money or effort. That sheet metal is just a shiny version of the same old story.

Man, north end makes total sense. If it's the property I'm thinking about off of Elm, there's like three different kinds of flashing on that roof and none of them match. So was the homeowner trying to sell it or did they just get tired of looking at a leak?
