Overheard a pro saying he soaks brushes in fabric softener overnight

Was grabbing coffee at the supply shop on 7th street and this old timer was telling a new guy about his brush cleaning routine. He said a capful of liquid fabric softener in a bucket of water does wonders for loosening up hardened creosote and soot. Anyone tried this or got a better method for keeping brushes from getting stiff?

The old timer's got good intentions but fabric softener is a terrible idea in the long run. I used to do this for years and it leaves a waxy residue that messes up how the brush holds paint and dries over time. Best thing I ever learned was from a guy at the hardware store, he told me to use straight mineral spirits or kerosene for the heavy tar and creosote, then wash with dish soap and hot water. I keep a old coffee can with mineral spirits on my shelf, dip the brush in there after every job and it stays soft for months with no buildup.

Kerosene'll eat through creosote but ruins natural bristles over time.
