Found a whole bird's nest in a chimney over in Maplewood
It was a huge one, completely blocking the flue. The homeowner had no idea (they said the fireplace 'just felt a little weak' last winter). Anyone have a good method for removing them without making a total mess in the living room?

Honestly, that's a professional's job. Trying to pull that down yourself is how you get a living room that looks like a crime scene and a very angry bird family. Their "weak fireplace" feeling was probably a carbon monoxide backup waiting to happen. Call a chimney sweep, pay the money, and be glad they found it before next winter.

My uncle in Toledo tried to clear a nest himself back in 2012. He ended up with two very upset raccoons in his sunroom and a bill from animal control that was DOUBLE what a sweep would have cost. You're totally right, @black.claire, that "weak" feeling is such a huge red flag people miss. It's wild how much trouble a blocked chimney can cause, way beyond just some soot.

Totally a crime scene in the living room" lol come on. You guys are acting like removing a bird's nest is brain surgery. I've cleared three nests from my own chimney over the years, and yeah it's a little dusty, but you just lay down a tarp and open a window. Calling a sweep for that is like hiring a mechanic to change your windshield wipers. And the carbon monoxide scare is overblown too - if the chimney was blocked, the smoke just wouldn't draft right, you'd smell it immediately. Not saying some people shouldn't call a pro, but this whole "call a sweep or your house explodes" thing is exactly why these companies charge $300 for something you can do in 20 minutes with a shop vac and a broom handle.
