Vent: Bought a 'pro' mandoline slicer that was a total waste

Saw a fancy mandoline slicer online for $85. It looked great in the pictures. The first time I used it, the blade guard snapped right off. Couldn't get a clean slice on anything after that. Ended up tossing it and going back to my old knife. Anyone have a mandoline they actually trust for heavy kitchen use?

Ugh that's the worst, sorry that happened. I had the same problem with a cheap plastic one falling apart. I finally caved and got a basic stainless steel Benriner, the kind you see in restaurant kitchens. It's not fancy at all, but the blade is super sharp and the thing is built like a tank. I've had mine for years now and it still works perfectly, even with big batches of potatoes for gratin.

Oh man, I gotta jump in here. That's actually a mandoline slicer, not a Benriner. Benriner is just the brand name, like how people call tissues Kleenex. It's a super common mix-up, no worries. The stainless steel ones are definitely the way to go though, you're right about that. The plastic ones feel like they'll snap if you look at them wrong.
