Question about the right way to hold a knife

A cook I worked with in Chicago told me my pinch grip was wrong, that my thumb should be on the blade's spine, not the handle. I tried it his way for a week and my wrist felt better, but my cuts were slower. I'm curious if others think the speed loss is worth the comfort, or if there's a middle ground. How do you all hold your chef's knife?

Ever have that thumb on the spine feel weird at first?

Totally... it's like your hand forgets how to hold a book for a second. Mine always slides too far up the back cover at first. Takes a minute to find that sweet spot where it feels balanced.
