Thought dollar store spices would ruin my chili, but a cook at a church potluck in San Antonio proved me wrong
I always figured the 99 cent spice jars at the dollar store were basically colored dust, so I kept buying the $4 ones at the grocery store even when money got tight. Last month this older guy named Ruben at a church potluck in San Antonio handed me a bowl of his chili and it was honestly better than mine, way deeper flavor. I asked what he used and he pulled out dollar store chili powder and cumin and said he'd been cooking with them for 20 years. I was skeptical but I tried it at home, same amounts I always use, and the pot came out fine, maybe even a little brighter. What got me was the expiration date thing, his jars were fresher than the ones sitting in my cabinet for two years. Now I'm trying to figure out which cheap spices are actually worth it and which ones I should still splurge on, so does anybody here have a short list?
