DAE think dried beans are overrated for cheap eating? Took me 5 hours to figure out my pot was the problem
Everyone in this club pushes dried beans as the ultimate cheap protein. I bought a 4 pound bag for $3.20 at the Aldi on Cicero and spent two Saturdays trying to get them soft. Soaked overnight, simmered for 2 hours, still crunchy. Finally figured out my old aluminum pot was too thin and the heat was all over the place. Bought a $25 heavy bottom pot and now they cook in 90 minutes flat. But here is my thing: a can of beans is 89 cents and done in 2 minutes. I get that 4 pounds dry is cheaper per serving, but the gas and my Saturday afternoons are not free. Who here actually thinks dried beans are worth it, and what am I missing?
