Tried envelope budgeting vs a spreadsheet for 3 months - envelopes won by a landslide
I spent January using a Google spreadsheet to track my cash spending categories, but I kept forgetting to log small purchases like a $4 coffee or a $6 lunch. Then in February I switched to old school envelope method with labeled envelopes for groceries, gas, and fun money. Having the actual cash in hand made me think twice before buying anything. I ended up saving about $120 in February compared to January just because the physical act of handing over money felt real. Has anyone else found that digital tracking just doesnt have the same mental impact as watching your envelope go empty?

Envelope method was a game changer for me too. I think what @the_margaret said about seeing patterns is so true - I noticed I was grabbing fast food way more on days when I was tired, not hungry. The cash just makes the whole thing more real than any app ever did.

Oh honey, the envelope system gets you where it counts... but here's something nobody talks about. When I did envelopes, I started noticing patterns in my spending that spreadsheets never showed me. Like, seeing a coffee envelope get skinny on a Tuesday made me realize I was stress spending, not just grabbing a treat. And the moment I had to literally pull cash out of my gas envelope to cover a pizza delivery? That hit different than any spreadsheet cell turning red. Plus, that leftover cash at the end of the month felt like found money, not just numbers on a screen...
