The time I paid cash for a used lawnmower and it blew up after 2 weeks

Last spring I saw an ad for a riding mower, $350 cash only. I drove out to this fellow's house in Millbrook, looked it over, handed him the bills. Got it home and it ran fine for about 10 days, then the engine started knocking real bad. I took the head off and found a crack in the block someone had tried to patch with epoxy. That $350 taught me a lesson about checking things closer when you're paying cash on the spot with no return policy. Has anyone else gotten burned buying something big with cash that looked fine but turned out to be hiding serious problems?

That epoxy story is rough, my buddy lost $500 on a trailer with a rotted frame.
