Lost $60 at a gas station because I forgot cash only means cash only

Last Friday I stopped at a Shell in Austin for snacks and a drink, grabbed everything, got to the register, and the card reader was down. I had cash in my other jacket, but of course I left it at home. I had to put back a whole basket of stuff and the clerk just watched me do it. Anyone else have that moment where you forget your own rule and pay the embarrassment tax?

Used to roll my eyes at people who treated cash-only spots like a personal attack, but nah, I get it now. The walk of shame back to the shelf with the clerk staring is brutal. That old dude probably sees that ten times a day, still doesn't make it less awkward. Now I keep a $20 crumpled in my car console just for these moments, learned that the hard way too.
