Just canceled a car rental reservation over the phone deposit rule

Booked a weekend rental in Austin last month with a debit card because I don't carry plastic. They wanted a $250 hold on my checking account. That money sat frozen for 10 days after I returned the car. Missed a utility payment because of it. Now I only use rental places that accept cash for the base rate and no hold. Anyone else ditch rentals over holds like that?

Tried a local shop that just takes cash, zero drama. Never looked back.
